2020 has been described as the year for change, an opportunity to reflect on the future we want. L’Oreal, a US$162.5 billion cosmetic company shares this sentiment, recently revealing their newest program, L’Oreal for the Future-- a mission to become completely sustainable by 2030. Within this mission, the company is committed to achieving carbon neutrality across all their sites and to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 50%. What is interesting to me is that the formulas used within their products are also changing. 100% of the water used in the industrial process will be recycled and re-used, all raw materials will be traceable and none of which are linked to deforestation. Unfortunately notorious for its negative impact on the environment, the cosmetics industry contributes largely to pollution and the depletion of natural resources, with our everyday actions as consumers exacerbating this issue. I really hope L’Oreal’s mission inspires a catalyst for change among other cosmetic companies going forward.
